RANSON, W.Va. - The West Virginia Healthcare Human Resources Association (WVHHRA) has established a scholarship program to help finance the higher education for employees and children of employees of WVHHRA member organizations.
Each year, five $500 scholarships are offered. Of the 24 applicants this year, two recipients were from St. Mary’s Medical Center, one from St. Mary’s Hospital, one from West Virginia University Hospitals, and one from WVUH-East’s Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Luther Mumaw, an emergency room technician at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, was awarded a WVHHRA scholarship for 2010. Mumaw is currently working on his prerequisites to enter the nursing program at Blue Ridge Community & Technical College. He has 31 years of EMS experience working with fire and rescue, and is looking forward to continuing work in the EMS field as a registered nurse.
Scholarship applicants must be high school seniors, high school graduates or college undergraduates enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study at an accredited college, university, or hospital based training program and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. The student must be pursuing a health care related career. Both two and four year programs are eligible.
Each candidate must complete a Health Occupation Scholarship Application form, and prepare a one page personal resume outlining education, personal work, volunteer, community service and leadership achievement. They must also write a one or two page essay outlining career goals and reasons for interest in the scholarship program. Lastly, they must provide a copy of their most recent transcript and submit one personal and one educational reference.
