OWLS is a WVUH-East sponsored programs targeted to persons 55+ who want to age healthfully to live stronger and wiser as they grow older. Made possible by a grant from Senator John Unger, the program is supported by Berkeley County Senior Services, Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation, Jefferson County Parks and Recreation, WVU Extension, and the Martinsburg Mall.
In addition to being able to take advantage of health and wellness educational programs, periodic free screenings, etc., OWLS participants can earn prizes by taking part in the physical activity incentive portion of the program.
No gym membership is required (unless you'd like to!) and there are plenty of ideas given in the OWLS membership packet on how you can take advantage of getting physical at home or at one of the local parks or senior centers.
During the program's first 12-weeks, the challenge is to average at least 100 minutes of cardio exercise a week. For those who like to excel beyond the standard requirements, there are bonus credits to be earned. Utilizing the program's simple tracking form, once the first incentive period has been completed, simply submit your tracking form to The Wellness Center at City Hospital to receive your official OWLS t-shirt, along with Stage II tracking materials to start recording the next 12-week challenge, and so on.
The program is set-up to last a year from your desired start date. Not only will you continue to receive prizes at each completed challenge, just think how much healthier and fit you will be in a year's time!
